If you are looking for something quick and simple that’ll work, try using an electric coffee grinder.
You can pulse it sporadically and eventually the texture will become very fine.
It’s also worth noting that you’ll have to add oil to the coffee grinder as this will make the process of turning ginger garlic into paste easier because the pieces should be pulverized more efficiently with oil present than with water alone.

- Peel fresh ginger and peel garlic or chop in a food processor to obtain a paste.
- Add oil or butter and cardamom powder, cumin powder, turmeric, salt to taste i.e., enough to make it smooth.
- Work for 3 minutes on the high-speed setting with the food processor running.
- Scoop into an airtight container and refrigerate until needed for cooking or use as required.
This ginger paste can last up to two weeks in the refrigerator if stored correctly.
If not using within two weeks, store in the freezer in small ziplock bags so you keep squeezing out but not eating too much at once!
Ginger Garlic Paste Using A Mortar And Pestle
Finally, ginger can also be ground into a paste by using a mortar and pestle.
- Wash and peel the ginger root, cut into small pieces and then add the peeled garlic cloves. Put these aside for a moment.
- Put a small amount of salt in your mortar. Put the ginger or garlic there too. Push on the tool so that it makes smaller pieces than individual ones.
- Keep stirring the mixture. If there are large pieces, put them back in the bowl. They should be in a wet paste-like consistency with chunks from time to time.

It’s best to start with raw, peeled garlic and ginger root.
Peel the ginger and then grate it on a Microplane grater or finely slice it with a mandolin slicer.
