How Long Does It Take To Grind Coffee Beans Manually?

About 5 to 15 minutes. The duration mostly depends on your strength, method, and amount of coffee you want to grind. Manually grinding your coffee beans is an excellent option if you have the energy and lack a solid blender or coffee grinder. Most people shy away from this option due to the effort and time it’ll take.

Here are some ways you can grind coffee beans manually; You can use a –

  • Rolling pin
  • Hammer
  • Hand Mincer
  • Mortar and Pestle

Just bear in mind that you will have to exert significant energy, especially if you aim to get that fine coffee ground. Clear up about 7 minutes for a cup of coffee beans.

How Fine Should I Grind My Coffee?

The texture of your grind will depend on the strength you are going for. The finer you grind your coffee, the stronger it’ll be. Generally, here are the different coffee ground consistency –

  • Pulverized Grind AKA Superfine Grind: Ever seen refined sugar? These are finer than that. To get the maximum strength of your coffee, you can grind it to a super fine grind.
  • Fine grind: These come out finer than table salt and gives you a strong and flavorful cup of coffee.
  • Medium fine grind: This consistency is your best pick if you plan to use a cone-shaped pour-over.
  • Medium grind: If you love a café solo brewing finish, then medium grind will give you what you need
  • Coarse grind: This size is perfect for you if you are using a French press
  • Extra Coarse: This size of coffee is ideal for a cold brew coffee. So on those hot days where you need your coffee to serve as a coolant, the extra coarse consistency should be your pick.

Choosing how fine you grind your coffee beans is a matter of your preference. If you brew your coffee and get a sour taste, this simply means your coffee is under-extracted. What you should do is opt for a finer grind or increase your brewing time. On the other hand, if you get a bitter coffee, know that you have over-extracted your coffee. Simply go for a more coarse grind, or you can decrease brewing time.

Here is a nice post with a Coffee Grind Size Chart.

How Long Do I Grind Coffee Beans?

You’ll need about 8 – 10 seconds to grind for a coarse grind. Don’t do this at once but break it into pulses. To get a medium grind, use short pulses that add up to about 10 – 15 seconds. And adding about 6 – 7 more seconds to your medium grind will give you a fine grind. Bear in mind that close observation is critical here. Watch the consistency of the grind closely to determine when you have your preferred ground size.

Does Finer Grind Make Stronger Coffee?

Yes, a finer ground makes for a more robust coffee. So if you don’t want a potent coffee, you should opt for a more coarse grind. The longer you leave your coffee in the grinder, the finer it is. So be cautious during grinding, so you can take it out before your coffee beans are reduced to a smooth fine powder.

The 3 main things that determine the strength of your coffee is –

  • Texture of grind
  • Extraction rate when brewing
  • Total contact time

You should know that the higher the surface area of your ground coffee, the higher the extraction rate. If your ground is coarse, it has a lesser surface area than a fine grind.

If the extraction rate increases, the contact time decreases.

Therefore, a fine ground will have a higher extraction rate than a coarse ground. Also, the longer you leave it to brew (contact time), the more extraction takes place and the stronger your coffee. On the other hand, the coarse ground will have a lower surface area and extraction rate. So if you brew it for a short time, your coffee will be weak, except you significantly increase contact time.

Since we all love a quick cup of coffee, you should control the coffee strength by the texture of the grind. On days where your day needs a strong jumpstart, blend your coffee beans until it’s fine. And if you want a mild drink, make a coarse grind.

Is It Okay To Grind Coffee Beans The Night Before?

Yes, you can store ground coffee beans for more than a month in a freezer. But if you want to leave it out, it can last for one to two weeks before its freshness starts reducing. No one wants to start a day with a flavorless cup of coffee.

Here are a few things that reduce the quality of your ground coffee beans –

Exposure to Oxygen

You should know that the moment your coffee ground is exposed to oxygen, it begins to lose its strength and flavor. This is why you can store a well-sealed coffee bean ground in your pantry for about 2 weeks without losing its initial flavor.

This also applies to brewed coffee. So, your freshly brewed coffee gets stale the longer it’s exposed to oxygen. This is why you should seal your ground coffee and brew it when you are ready to consume it. After 30 to 45 minutes after brewing, your coffee oils will be degraded, creating an acidic taste that no one loves. Brewed coffee is considered non-edible after 24 hours, so you should throw it out after such time.

Temperature

The lower the temperature, the longer your coffee ground lasts. But it is advisable to store your coffee beans in bulk and grind them in smaller sections. This way, you can get 6 months supply of coffee beans and grind enough for a couple of days at a time.

The rich and fresh flavor of home-ground coffee beans will be lost if you don’t consider the factors mentioned above.
